Generational Curses

Generational curses are believed to affect families for generations. A lack of knowledge about how to address them can lead to ongoing struggles. God’s truth brings freedom from sin. Understanding and accepting this truth offers liberation

After grasping the significance of God's truths, it's important to understand that you have been redeemed from generational curses by the blood of Jesus. If you are in Christ, you are no longer under the Law of generational consequences, the penalty for ancestral sins. You are in Christ Jesus and under Grace. Freedom becomes evident as one realizes and lives according to the Word of God.

Generational curses are said to persist for three or four generations among those who hate God. Some point out that parental behaviors like addiction, abuse, idolatry, and immorality create cycles that affect later generations.

Choosing righteousness in Jesus, as Scripture describes, breaks generational curses. The Holy Spirit guides us to truth and stands with us as we resist the devil, who flees. James 4:7: Submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

By applying what Jesus did on the cross (Galatians 3:13), we escape sin’s consequences through repentance and belief in His salvation. By putting our faith in Jesus and resting in His finished work.

The Power of God
is Grace

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Cor 1:18-19

The message of the cross is that Jesus died for our sins. Grace is God’s undeserved favor, and more—it’s His presence empowering us to live His purpose. Grace is the message and God’s power to fulfill His work in us.

Despite this, many well-meaning Christians who love the Lord may feel burdened by generational curses. Why? Often, it’s simply because they don’t understand grace and law. This struggle is familiar to many.

Trying to keep the Law by effort seeks justification by works. In Christ, we’re under the New Covenant—saved by Grace and justified by Faith.

Bible Verses

Gal 2:16... knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

Gal 2:20-21... I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain."

Gal 3:1-4 ... O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?  Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

Gal 3:24-25... Therefore, the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.  But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

Gal 5:4-5... You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

Rom 3:28 ... Therefore, we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law

In summary, we are Saved by Grace....

Jesus became the Curse

God gave the Old Covenant Law to lead us to Christ. The Law is holy, just, and good, but can’t make us holy, just, or good. It’s like a mirror that reveals flaws but can’t fix them.

God knew humans try to do things alone, so He gave the Law to show we couldn’t keep it perfectly and needed a Savior.

God seeks willing followers. He revealed our flaws so we’d see our need for a Savior and choose to submit to His will.

We all need God’s grace. We can’t keep the law by our own strength. Failing even once means falling short. The perfect law calls for perfection, reminding us to rely on Jesus’ perfection.

In Ezekiel 18:20, we find a law that states, “The soul that sins shall die.” But Jesus, who never sinned, gave Himself up to the cross willingly and took our place. so that He could save us from the payment of sin, which is death, Romans 6:23.

He kept the law perfectly. Then He exchanged His righteousness for our sin when He died and paid the price for us. Jesus made it lawful for whosoever would believe in Him could live with Him forever.

It’s His mercy, not our ability, and even when we fall short, we can trust in the cross of Christ to save us.

According to the Scriptures, the power of generational curses is also broken by the Cross of Christ. Jesus became a curse on behalf of others, taking upon Himself generational curses and breaking the power of sin.

The law gives power to sin, but Jesus' actions set people free from the curse of the Law by becoming the curse for us.

Apply it by Faith

According to the Word of God, by having faith in Jesus, His righteousness is transferred to believers. An exchange is made. Jesus has taken away sin, and  believers receive His righteousness by faith.

If you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth, you will be saved from all generational curses. According to your faith in Jesus, who has set you free, this deliverance will be accomplished.

Gal 3:13-14... Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. NKJV

Victory comes within the Kingdom of God. But you will not see it unless you are born again. In John 3:3, Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."You are born again when you believe and receive Jesus as your personal Savior.

If you ever feel uncertain, remember the man who said, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief." Trust that Jesus is at work within you as you rely on what He has done. Even when you are weak, He is strong for you!

We have mountain-moving faith available to us! In Mark 11:22, Jesus encourages His disciples to have the faith of God—a faith with no doubt. This faith is accessed through prayer and fasting. Remember, it’s not about working for it; it’s about seeking God and receiving what He has provided for us. Believe, and be free in Jesus’ Name!

Although anxiety and stress can stem from financial worries or any other problem, remember that overcoming these challenges is possible. The victory comes as you follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is written in Hebrews 13: ”I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you. So that with good courage we say, The Lord is my helper. I will not fear.”
